It's the most wonderful time of the year!

Stockings, gingerbread cookies, ornaments and holiday cheer are everywhere! When the weather outside is frightful, curling up with a nice, soothing audiobook is quite delightful. Plug in your headphones and turn up the volume to these holiday-themed titles.

For some, Christmas can be a joyous celebration! However, for the Sullivans, it's another lonely holiday. No stuffed stockings, gifts, or even a tree can get them into the holiday spirit. However, things change when a Secret Santa sends gifts to their home. Suddenly, the widower Henry and his two children's lives are changed on The Twelve Topsy-turvy, Very Messy Days of Christmas.

The holidays should bring love and festivities, but this isn't always the case. Just ask Lily, whose sunny spirit has shattered due to her grandfather's recent heart attack. In The Twelve Days of Dash & Lily her boyfriend Dash, brother Langston and close friends go on a mission to help her recapture the holiday spirit.

Love is a beautiful thing, especially during the holidays. In the holiday romance What Light, Sierra and her family only go to California to sell Christmas trees, NOT to fall in love. Things change when she meets Caleb, a handsome teen with a complicated past. When you listen to this audiobook, you'll learn about the power of forgiveness, family, and the meaning of true love.

Winter is the coldest season and it isn't just because of the snow. In The Holiday Switch, Lily and Teddy aren't just co-workers, but bitter rivals who will argue about anything from tangled icicle lights to gift shop merch displays. However, things take a turn when they accidentally switch cell phones and discover that they've been hiding things from each other. Can they fix things before the ice melts? Listen to find out...

Movie Season’s Readings https://www.chipublib.org/blogs/post/movie-seasons-readings/ Mon, 27 Nov 2023 14:01:13 +0000 https://www.chipublib.org/?p=9763814

There's nothing quite like reading a good book. However, what happens when your favorite book comes to life on the big screen? The experience can be quite polarizing. Here are a few books that have been made into recent and forthcoming movies.

The eagerly awaited new adaptation of Alice Walker's Pulitzer Prize-winning classic The Color Purple hits theatres this Christmas. The novel was previously made into a celebrated movie starring Whoopi Goldberg and Oprah Winfrey. The novel was later adapted into an acclaimed stage musical, and the new movie is adapted from that Broadway version.

Who can make a sunrise and sprinkle it with dew? Cover it with chocolate and a miracle or two? Willy Wonka can, of course! In Roald Dahl's classic novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, five lucky children get to tour the mysterious chocolate factory of eccentric chocolatier Willy Wonka. There are three movie adaptations of this book: 1971's Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, 2005's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and the upcoming prequel Wonka, which will be released on December 15.

Is the love of money the root of all evil? This appears to be the case in Osage County, where a series of grisly murders are taking place. In Killers of the Flower Moon, FBI agent Thomas Bruce White is tasked with investigating the murders of wealthy Osage Native Americans whose tribal land had oil on it. A riveting page-turner, this Martin Scorsese-directed film will leave you with as many interesting questions as answers.

J. Robert Oppenheimer was more than simply the father of the atomic bomb. In the Pulitzer Prize-winning biography American Prometheus, we learn that he was an important historical figure whose complex personality and hard-driving style changed the dynamics of physics. The book's film adaptation, titled Oppenheimer, captures the essence of a man who changed the world in his own way.

Some villains weren't born bad. This is just one of many lessons learned in the critically acclaimed Hunger Games prequel, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. Like many villains, Coriolanus Snow was born into wealth and privilege and had the world at his feet. So how did he become the diabolical, ruthless future President of Panem? If you want to find out, you'll have to read the book and watch the movie, out in theaters now.

Whether it's football, basketball, boxing or rowing, to play in competitive sports requires dedication and sacrifice. These are the traits that the eight-oared rowing crew displayed as part of the 1936 Summer Olympics. In The Boys in the Boat, we learn how the members bonded through poverty, classism and oppression to earn the gold medal. The movie version will roll out December 25.

However, the escape can be found in the form of books such as The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. In anticipation of its film adaptation, here are some similar titles sure to inspire you.

One touch and it's over. The page-turning thriller Shatter Me tells the story of Juliette, a shy, timid and powerful girl who has never fought for herself. This changes when she is committed to an asylum and teams up with a free-spirited rebel to start a revolution.

When Thomas wakes up in an elevator lift, the only thing he can remember is his name. In The Maze Runner, he goes on a dark journey down a limitless and ever-changing maze with terrifying secrets of his past.

At 16, Ruby should be fighting acne, studying for the PSATs and crushing on boys. In The Darkest Minds, she escapes from a camp for teens with superpowers and joins a group of outcasts to fight against a rigid and unjust government.

Sorry Six Flags, there's a new theme park in town. In Augland, you'll find food, games and shelter from the post-war world. It's up to Ashton to escape the deadly park's tyranny and fight for her freedom.

Roses are red, violets are blue. No matter where Winston goes, Big Brother is watching him...and you! George Orwell's classic novel 1984 sees Winston learn the difference between the truth, lies and finding your voice in a world that would rather you be silent.

Top Picks: Jamie Lee Curtis https://www.chipublib.org/blogs/post/top-picks-jamie-lee-curtis/ Fri, 27 Oct 2023 13:50:08 +0000 https://www.chipublib.org/?p=9762462

Creative, compassionate, and humble. These are just a few words to describe actress, humanitarian and children's author Jamie Lee Curtis. With a career spanning four decades, Curtis is known primarily for her roles in horror films in addition to dramatic and comedic roles. One of the most prolific actresses of her generation, Curtis has earned several awards including a Golden Globe, BAFTA and an Oscar. In celebration of her 65th birthday on November 22, we're taking a look at Curtis's most iconic performances.

In 1978, Curtis made her film debut as babysitter Laurie Strode in the slasher classic Halloween. This is Curtis's best-known role, and she has reprised it in six Halloween sequels, concluding with Halloween Ends. The role established Curtis not only as a serious actress but a scream queen as well. She followed the original Halloween with similar roles in films such as The Fog.

A decade after her film debut, Curtis made the transition into more comedic roles. In the 1988 classic A Fish Called Wanda, her portrayal of the witty femme fatale Wanda Gershwitz earned her critical acclaim in addition to a BAFTA nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

Curtis's comedy streak continued as psychiatrist Dr. Tess Coleman in the 2003 classic Freaky Friday. In this remake of the 1976 original, Curtis and Lindsay Lohan portray a mother and daughter whose bodies are switched by a mysterious and magical Chinese fortune. The film's success earned Curtis a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy.

No one wins when the family feuds. This is a lesson the Thrombey family learns the hard way in the murder mystery comedy Knives Out. Curtis portrays the hard-nosed and snobbish Linda Thrombey, the eldest child of crime writer Harlan Thrombey, whose death is surrounded by a web of red herrings and family dysfunction.

The world needs saving, and it's up to Evelyn Quan Wang and her alternate selves to do so. In Everything Everywhere All at Once, she needs all the help she can get. As the persnickety IRS inspector Deirdre Beaubeirdre, Curtis delivers a witty and dazzling performance that ultimately earned her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.

Sweaters and pumpkin spice lattes aren't the only things to look forward to in the fall.

As the weather changes, let's curl up with some spine-chilling and haunting books such as All These Sunken Souls: A Black Horror Anthology.

Everyone needs a vacation, but some trips aren't what they seem. This is a lesson Jay learns in the chilling dystopia The Getaway. Jay and his family are vacationing at the luxurious Karloff Country Resort, where everyone is having a good time until his friend Connie goes missing. Soon, Jay will have to decide what's more dangerous: the monster in your home, or the nightmare outside the hotel walls?

For Madison Washington, Springville High School is hell. As a social outcast, she's a frequent target for bullies. In the polarizing thriller The Weight of Blood, she's taking center stage at the school's first-ever integrated prom. Following the release of a racist viral video, Maddy realizes that by attending prom, her biracial identity isn't the only uphill battle she must fight...

Something wicked this way comes. In The Taking of Jake Livingston, Jake has quite a bit on his plate. Not only is he openly gay, but he's also the minority at his prep school. Also, he has the ability to see and communicate with the dead. However, things take a turn when he meets the ghost of Sawyer, a ghost who went on a shooting rampage whilst alive. The problem? Sawyer wants to possess Jake's body to finish what he started. Who knew adolescence could be so complicated?

Mesmortes Coven Academy isn't your regular school. Logan learns this and more in the captivating novel The Witchery. As the new girl in town, her arrival is just in time. Every fall, people are attacked by Wolves as part of the Haunting Season. Iris, Thalia, and Jaliah, known collectively as the Red Three, take Logan under their wing to not only help Logan control her powers but to break the years-long curse of this magical town.

The Bronx is more than just a borough in New York. It's known for being the birthplace of hip-hop, many shopping centers, and where children have mysteriously disappeared for the last few months. In the killer novel Burn Down, Rise up, Raquel's blind eye is unturned when her crush Charlize's cousin goes missing. The duo teams up and uncovers the truth behind the disappearances: a terrifying underground urban legend could destroy not only the city but the world as they know it.

Labor Day Picks: Organizing Against Injustice https://www.chipublib.org/blogs/post/labor-day-picks-organizing-against-injustice/ Mon, 28 Aug 2023 13:00:06 +0000 https://www.chipublib.org/?p=9760090

Labor Day is more than just another day off from work or school. In fact, it is a celebration meant to honor the hard work and sacrifice of laborers who fought against unfairness within the workforce. To celebrate this holiday, we're going to take a look at the top picks that focus on organizing against injustice.

Get up and stand up for your rights! This is the lesson that Bella learns in the novel Uprising. In this polarizing page-turner, Bella works along with 500 immigrants in a factory under grueling conditions. Together, with her co-worker Yetta, the two women work to form a union and go on strike.

When facing adversity, you can either conform or fight the powers that be. No one understands this more than 17-year-old Layla Amin, the protagonist of the heart-racing novel Internment. As a young woman living in America, Layla and her family are forced into internment camps where she finds the courage to lead a revolution.

Sometimes you don't start a revolution, but instead end up joining one. This is the case for Remy Castell, the protagonist of the enticing novel Swift the Storm, Fierce the Flame. When her home planet Tundar is on the edge of extinction, her only goal is to flee with her missing friend. However, in order to find them, Remy begrudgingly joins forces with Kiran, a rogue warrior who years ago left her for dead during a mission. Together, they must work together to not only find her friend but join a revolution to save the world.

For some, books are an escape. However, Zofia believes that they are a powerful weapon to be protected. Set during World War II, The Keeper of Hidden Books tells of Zofia's fight for others to not only read but more importantly to stand against inequality.

Pencils? Check. Notebooks? Check? Fear of the unknown? DOUBLE CHECK! As summer ends, a new school year approaches and that means homework, teachers, friends and thrilling mysteries to be solved. We're going to take a look at popular thrillers that are set in boarding schools.

Every school is known for having a clique. At Bates Academy, the mean girls rule the school. In People Like Us, Kay Donovan is a soccer star who finds her life turned upside down when another student is found dead. Friends turn into enemies and everyone is a suspect.

There are some lessons you cannot learn in a book. This proves to be true in Nick Brooks's page-turning thriller Promise Boys. At the Urban Promise Prep School, students Trey, Ramon and J.B. join forces to solve the grisly murder of their principal and in the process learn about themselves as well.

Melissa de la Cruz's popular thriller The Headmaster's List teaches us learn that life can change in a single night. Spencer Sandoval learns this lesson the hard way when she finds herself at the center of a fatal car crash involving her close circle of prep school friends and ex-boyfriend.

From a cheating ring to the discovery of a dead body, the lessons she's learning aren't coming from her textbooks.

Torrey-Wells Academy is not only powerful and prestigious, but mysterious as well. In the mystery novel They're Watching You, Maren Montgomery is determined to discover the truth about her best friend Polly's disappearance. What are your feelings when reading a new book? Is it excitement? Amusement? Perhaps joy? From the clean, sleek covers to freshly unturned pages, a new book can introduce you to new worlds, complex storylines and different characters.

In celebration of Asian American and Pacific Islander Month, we're going to take a look at new titles with Asian-American protagonists.

In Gloria Chao's acclaimed novel When You Wish Upon A Lantern, the author tells the story of two childhood friends who devote themselves to their parent's expectations whilst too afraid to act on their love for each other. Funny, lighthearted and creative, this title is indeed a page-turner.

Maurene Goo's fifth novel Throwback is a blend of Joy Luck Club meets Back to the Future. Samantha King is not only juggling school, friendships and boys, but also the expectations of her overbearing mother Priscilla. Naturally, Samantha wants to get away from her, but finds herself teleported back to the 90s alongside her own mother! Fun and engaging, this book explores what one gains and loses in the immigrant experience.

Fitting in is hard. But fitting into a prestigious prep school as a multicultural teen? That's harder! In Patricia Park's debut novel Imposter Syndrome and Other Confessions of Alejandra Kim, we follow the title character on a journey of self-discovery and standing up for what you believe in.

They say that a picture is worth a thousand words, and no one knows that better than Samantha Sakamoto. In Ann Liang's novel Beneath the Wide Silk Sky, Samantha is faced with prejudice, racism and violence after the Pearl Harbor attacks. To combat this, she delves into photography to document the problems around her.
